Recipe Thursdays: Hot Buttered Rum

One of my holiday favorites is Hot Buttered Rum. Here is a version you can make one cup at a time, with Metromint.

Hot Buttered Rum

1 1/2 teaspoons butter
1 Tablespoon brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 oz dark rum
2 Tablespoons vanilla ice cream
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup hot Peppermint Metromint
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Combine butter, brown sugar, and confectioners' sugar in a mug and stir until consistent. Add rum, ice cream and cinnamon, and top with hot Metromint. Mix until the ice cream and butter have melted together to make a creamy topping. Sprinkle with nutmeg and enjoy. 

Recipe Thursdays: Ginger (Mint) Cookies

I made these cookies last night and, even if the mint is barely detectable, they do wash down quite nicely with a Metromint Peppermint. And, FYI, these are SOFT ginger cookies.

Ginger (Mint) Cookies

2 1/4 cups flour
2 Tablespoons fresh ground ginger
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup Metromint Peppermint
1/4 cup molasses

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift together flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, blend butter, sugar, egg, water, and molasses with a handheld mixer until consistent, and then add it to the flour mix. Blend into a fluffy dough. 

Roll dough into small balls. Optional: Roll into sugar for extra sweetness/texture. Place 2 inches appart on cookie sheet, flatten and bake for 10-12 minutes. 

Let cool, and enjoy!

Metromint Giro di San Francisco

Thanks to everyone who attended and supported the Metromint Giro on Monday. We had about 3000 attendees, and 600 participating cyclists. Our own team, Metromint Cycling, received two 3rd place positions and one 4th place position. It was great to see them on our podium!

In the expo area, we sampled all seven varieties of Metromint, as well as Metroelectro micronutrient water. We hope those in attendance were able to try something new and get one of our cool tote bags!

A shout out to all of our Giro partners: San Francisco Bicycle coalition, The Freewheel, Velo Promo, Golden Chain Cyclists, Rocktape, Pactimo, Cykel, Sports Basement, De La Paz Coffee Roasters, Breakaway performance, Mike's Bikes, Rapha, and Ride SFO. And to all of the Soma Beverage employees who volunteered to participate on Labor Day. We couldn't have done it without you.

Giving Back with Project Goodberrymint

Metromint Team: Scott, Evan, Corina, Rio, Lara, Jaime, Jenn, and Jon outside the SF Food Bank.

Last Wednesday our Metromint crew volunteered at the SF Food Bank for 3 hours as part of Project Goodberrymint. It was a fun and awesome experience! Our project leader provided us with a great sense of humor while we packed, weighed, labeled, and boxed over 3,500 pounds of rice. It felt amazing to know that our efforts will help feed thousands of people who are in need. I definitely want to volunteer at the SF Food Bank again in the near future!

Hosting the Giro di San Francisco

This was my 2nd year planning the expo area at our Giro di SF and I’m happy to report that it was a smooth operation! Weather is a key factor in planning outdoor events so I was very excited when I found out there was a sunny weather forecast for Labor Day weekend.

A fun expo involves vendor participation and this year our expo area was filled with The Free Wheel’s bike support service, Giant Bike’s 2011 race bikes, De La Paz iced coffee, Bear Naked granola, Flex Power sports cream (see photo on right of me with Flex Power friends), Sports Basement’s lounge area, Rock Tape’s taping station, Breakaway Performance’s consultation, and even a banana costume. Our vendors also sponsored the Giro with numerous prize donations for primes, a motivating component of a criterium. Overall, the beautiful SF weather brought an amazing race day and spectators enjoyed cheering for their cyclists. Thank you to all the competitors, sponsors, and volunteers for making this year’s Giro a success!

Halloween at Metromint

This Halloween, Metromint held an online costume contest for our fans. We were happy to receive a number of costume photos from enthusiastic fans and, though difficult, we narrowed it down to one winner: Jenikah. Jenikah spent a week making this beautiful peacock costume by hand! These photos show the costume modeled by Megan Jade:

The Metromint office also held a costume contest among employees. Founder Rio Miura and President Scott Lowe awarded the grand prize of 1 paid day off to Jenn Chan, who wore a Bruno inspired Velcro suit that kept her warm, uncomfortable, and sticking to everyone and everything all day long. Yours truly was declared the 2nd prize winner of a $75 gift certificate to Whole Foods for my Alladin Sane-era version of David Bowie's alter ego Ziggy Stardust, which Metromint President Scott Lowe deemed as "solid." Honorable mentions went to Kiyoe Nakazawa's cheerleading costume, and Tessa Phosrithong's Vampire costume. Go team!

holiday spirit

We are two companies in one office. Yep. Soma Beverage Co., and David Rio Inc. Needless to say, with two companies under one roof, our office can get hectic sometimes, so festivities are often welcome!

Donna is the accounting guru for David Rio, and she is the queen of office festivities! She constantly keeps all of us guessing and smiling. Last Halloween Donna surprised us with her Halloween costume and song…she appeared as “LD the Wrapper”, yes Wrapper with a W, complete with theme costume and a rap about accounting (sorry, no picture to share). This year, she has again gifted us with office holiday festivities: a blinking light necklace! Though she had no holiday song to sing, nor rap to rhyme, she made us laugh and smile with holiday cheer. Thanks Donna, and from all of us at Soma Beverage Co. and David Rio Inc., to all of you, Happy Holidays!

 

valentine's day recap

When was the last time a stranger wished you “Happy Valentine’s Day?” On Thursday February 14th, more than 250 people got a Happy Valentine’s Day wish from me, and I was amazed at the happiness my random act of Metromint kindness generated! The smiles. The laughs. Maybe it was the bottle of Chocolatemint I was offering them. Maybe it was the idea that a stranger would be wishing them Happy Valentines Day. Or maybe it was my bright red wig.

Whatever it was, the entire San Francisco-based Metromint staff was out spreading Metromint love— from King Street Cal Train station to Union Square. We handed out over 2500 bottles of our new Chocolatemint Metromint and in return, received smiles, thanks, laughs and, yes, even a romantic offer or two for dates!

The feedback we received was mostly positive. Our newest variety, Chocolatemint, may seem a little unusual but, believe me, it’s just as delicious and refreshing as our other varieties. Of course, some people do not want to mix their water with chocolate and will not try it at all. Maybe they don’t like chocolate, or maybe they assume it is sweetened. I think they would be surprised if they did taste it. If you haven’t tried it already, you’ll have to see for yourself.

We’re looking forward to getting a lot of feedback from the natural food stores, cafes, and restaurants on both Chocolatemint and a new soon-to-be-released variety which, as Scott mentioned last week, will feature red dots. We’ll be at Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, CA from March 14 – 16th. If you’re planning on going there, stop by our booth, #2572.
