While training for the upcoming Pan-American Bocce Championships, SF Chronicle writer Julian Guthrie stopped by the Aquatic Park Bocce Club to ask me a few questions. It was nice to see her again as we’d met in 2003 when she did a piece about our club. Her latest story was about all the retrofitting projects taking place at Aquatic Park & especially the Maritime Museum. Her photographer asked to take a few action shots and coincidentally I was wearing my Metromint All-Stars jersey. I have Metromint at the club, so we all enjoyed our favorite flavors during the shoot.

A few days later it was great to open the Chronicle to see a shot of me throwing a ball! Hopefully all this construction at the park will continue to have a positive effect on the Aquatic Park Bocce Club. So far, so good.

keeping it rolling and sharing the love

Two years ago, while visiting in Bar Harbor, I discovered Metromint and haven't been the same since.  As soon as I arrived home, I broke out my computer and did as much research as I could to find out more about this amazing water. Anyone who knows me will tell you that once I've got something on my mind, I need to know everything about it ... I'm one of those people who is always in pursuit of knowledge and the 25-hour day.

While I realize I can never get more time, with practice, I've gotten pretty good at living with the time I've been given. I consciously choose everything that is in my life, literally. I've learned that it is possible to do the things you love, to live the life you choose, and to do so with minimal stress. So with that said, I continued to pursue Metromint and applied to be an All-Star. I was very excited that my pursuits paid off. Tanyar2

As an All Star, I love to share Metromint with everyone I meet. Aside from horseback riding, running and cycling ... I'm an avid adventure seeker and am always giving out Metromint at every event I'm involved with. In fact, before I was an All Star I was still giving it out to everyone I knew. Last year (see photos) I was even handing out Metromint in the most unlikely of places. Yes, I was sharing my favorite water with fishermen (and women) during an ice fishing tournament in Maine.

I give it to my neighbors, my husband's clients and my children. One of my children even has his own concoction that he shares with his friends ... he takes the Cherrymint and the Chocolatemint and makes what he calls "dessert" water ... and honestly, who can blame him? Who doesn't like Chocolate covered Cherries?  My personal favorite is the Chocolatemint, but I always bring the Spearmint or Peppermint with me when working out. Not only does it keep me hydrated but I feel like it also keeps my breath fresh ... which is a good thing at the gym!

In addition to being an All Star, I'm a full-time film/tv producer, a  photographer by hobby, a wife and a mother of two with an obsession for technology, fitness and blogging... and honestly I couldn't do any of it without taking care of myself. That includes staying hydrated. I can't thank Metromint enough!

back to school

9/5/08

Briangraves

Ahhhhh it’s that time again. The floors have been waxed, the desks have been dusted off, and the bulletin boards freshly stapled. Just when my cat, Mr. Jinx has grown accustomed to being spoiled, day after day, by me for another summer, this teacher has to wake up and head into the classroom…for another school year. Just when I get into the groove of waking up for a workout or a bike ride or a mid-morning trip to Target to beat the rush, I see it…the back to school section.

This year I was in Phoenix for a family gathering when I saw my first back to school section. It was July 2nd. The students haven’t even been out of school for a month yet, the classrooms haven’t been even cleaned yet, and this teacher just ran into a back to school section on summer vacation. Yikes!

After vacation, I returned back to Chicago. Walking to dinner, I received an email on my Blackberry. It was a congratulations email from Michele Thorne, informing I would be a Metromint All Star! Suddenly I was transported back in time feeling like a third grade student winner a ribbon on track and field day at my elementary school. I was excited to get back to school and share the news with my students in the fall.

Now it’s back to school time. After about ten and half weeks off, many bike rides, beach volleyball games, working out, spending time with friends and family, and lastly getting refreshed to start a new year in the third grade (for the tenth time)…this teacher can’t wait to crack open the books…and another Metromint water.

Stay hydrated…that’s your homework.

my year as a metromint all-star

4/15/08
by Lauren Thies, Metromint All Star Laurenthies_tri Lauren Thies cycling in the Beaver Freezer Sprint Triathlon

I've definitely enjoyed my involvement with Metromint as an All-Star. This year there were a total of twelve participants, and I was one of two swimmers. This past summer I had an amazing experience representing the U.S. National Team in Swimming at the Pan American Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. I was nominated the Women's Team Captain and came home with two Gold medals! On April 5th, I participated in my first triathlon: OSU's annual Beaver Freezer Sprint Triathlon. It was my first competitive event since Brazil and the conditions were anything but tropical. The tri involved a 500 yard pool swim, 12 mile bike ride, and 3.1 mile run. Conditions were 44 degrees with winds in the high-teens... I was first out of the swim and ran to the transition area to grab my Metromint cycling jacket and get ready for the bike. Unlike swimming, where you actually rest between events, I now had to hop on a bike and try to average 18mph or better! With rain pricking my skin I tried to bear a smile. The run was great and I found my legs fairly quickly, which was suprising and nice. The event is very well run, nicely staffed and you can't beat the crowd supporting you every stroke, pedal, and step of the way— many thanks to the OSU Tri Club and supporters! I finished 2nd in my age group (25-29), and 9th overall out of 136 women. The woman who beat me in my age group was 1st overall for women— maybe I'll do triathalons more often? Metromint is a great refresher while swimming, biking, running and doing Bikram yoga. I enjoy sharing both the product and the concept to my circle. I have been taking Metromint eveywhere I go— swim and yoga clinics, corporate special events, a run with a friend, family and social events. In my experience, kids enjoy Orangemint and Chocolatemint the best, my co-workers are nuts for Orangemint, my friends enjoy the mild taste of Lemonmint, and my family thinks Peppermint and Spearmint taste like mouthwash (I disagree!). Stay hydrated, stay strong and keep believing in yourself and supporting those around you :)
